Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering

General Description of the Program

The Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (BSCE) is a four-year program that aims to provide students with knowledge in mathematics and science to be applied in the different specializations such as structural, transportation, water resource, geotechnical, environmental and construction project management. Under this program, students are trained to have exceptional skills in planning, design, and supervision of different infrastructures and civil engineering works.

Program Outcome

Three to five years after graduation, the Civil Engineering alumni shall have:

  1. Engaged in the practice of Civil Engineering or technopreneurship and innovation.
  2. Assumed significant roles with key responsibilities in their workplace.
  3. Involved themselves in professional, socio-civic, government, or non-government organizations.
  4. Demonstrated continuous professional development through certifications, attendance to training, seminars, and conferences and/or pursuit of graduate studies in engineering or related fields.

Program/Student Outcomes

  1. Apply knowledge of mathematics, natural science, engineering fundamentals and an engineering specialization to the solution of complex engineering problems.
  2. Conduct investigations of complex engineering problems using research-based knowledge and research methods including design of experiments, analysis and interpretation of data, and synthesis of information to provide valid conclusions.
  3. Design solutions for complex engineering problems and design systems, components or processes that meet specified needs with appropriate consideration for public health and safety, cultural, societal, and environmental considerations.
  4. Function effectively as an individual, and as a member or leader in diverse teams and in multi-disciplinary settings.
  5. Identify, formulate, research literature and analyze complex engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural sciences and engineering sciences.
  6. Apply ethical principles and commit to professional ethics and responsibilities and norms of engineering practice.
  7. Communicate effectively on complex engineering activities with the engineering community and with society at large, such as being able to comprehend and write effective reports and design documentation, make effective presentations, and give and receive clear instructions.
  8. Understand and evaluate the sustainability and impact of professional engineering work in the solution of complex engineering problems in societal and environmental context.
  9. Recognize the need for, and have the preparation and ability to engage in independent and life-long learning in the broadest context of technological change
  10. Apply reasoning informed by contextual knowledge to assess societal, health, safety, legal and cultural issues and the consequent responsibilities relevant to professional engineering practice and solutions to complex engineering problems.
  11. Create, select and apply appropriate techniques, resources, and modern engineering and IT tools, including prediction and modelling, to complex engineering problems with an understanding of the limitations.
  12. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of engineering management principles and economic decision-making and apply these to one’s own work, as a member and leader in a team, to manage projects and in multidisciplinary environments.

Specialization/Tracking

Structural Engineering

A sub-discipline of BSCE that focuses on the design and analysis of structural system to resist loads, stresses, and pressures from environmental and external sources such as earthquake, and wind to ensure the safety of the occupants throughout its lifespan.

Water Resources Engineering

A sub-discipline of BSCE that focuses on the study of hydrologic cycle and movement of water in the atmosphere and land surface. In addition, the hydraulic engineering responses through infrastructure development, design, and construction includes water supply system, sewerage, flood control and drainage, irrigation, and hydropower.

Program Educational Objectives

Three to five years after graduation, the civil engineering alumni shall be:

Involved in solving complex problems using their technical knowledge and skills

Engaged in significant roles with greater responsibilities in various sectors of the society

Engaged in continuous professional development activities

Facilities/Laboratories

Materials of Construction Laboratory (Matcons Lab)

Matcons laboratory is located at the ground floor (Room 101) of the FIT Building. It houses different equipment for testing materials used in construction such as concrete, steel, and asphalt. The centerpiece of the Matcons Lab is the Universal testing machine which is capable of checking compressive strength, shear strength and flexural strength of concrete, and tensile strength of steel. Researches pertaining to materials development and structural engineering of both students and professors are conducted in this laboratory. It also caters to other researches including those from senior high school and other universities.

Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory

Geotech Lab is located at the 10th floor (Room 1004) of FIT Building. It houses the equipment used for Geotechnical Engineering 1 (Soil Mechanics) and Geotechnical Engineering 2 (Foundation Engineering). Researches of students and professors regarding geotechnical engineering and laboratory experiments are also conducted in this facility.

Hydraulics Laboratory

Hydraulics Lab is located at the 9th floor (Room 908) of the FIT Building. It houses the equipment and apparatus needed for the fluid mechanics and hydraulics laboratory experiments. Students conducting experiments and researches in line with the water resource track are using this laboratory. Other university and senior high school students conducting experiments are also welcome to use this facility.
